U-Haul reports third-quarter earnings

AMERCO, parent of U-Haul International, Reno, Nevada, reported net earnings for its third quarter ended Dec. 31, 2009, of $0.3 million, compared with a net loss of $28.2 million for the same period last year.

“The positive results for the quarter were a reflection of growth in truck rental transactions combined with our cost control measures,” said Joe Shoen, AMERCO chairman. “We are continuing our efforts to enhance long-term shareholder value by focusing on our moving and storage customers.”

For the quarter, self-moving equipment rental revenues increased $9.7 million compared with the third quarter of fiscal 2009 and self-storage revenues increased $0.5 million. Operating expenses in the moving and storage segment were cut $17.8 million from the previous year largely due to declines in personnel expense and equipment repair costs.
