Safety Tip: Safety success — injuries reduced by 74 percent

One supervisor found a way to reduce injuries at his workplace by a whopping 74 percent. How did he do it?

  • He increased his training sessions by adding monthly safety training classes to the schedule. Just one 10-to-15-minute safety meeting each month can lead to a safer work place.
  • His next step was to start making frequent safety stop-bys. He set aside one day a month to walk around and write up anyone violating safety rules. This should be done each time you see a violation, as soon as you see it.
  • He added a new rule — any worker written up for three safety violations within a six-month period would be fired.

Tough love, sure, but those moves reduced the number of injuries at his company from 23 last year to six this year, a 74 percent decrease.
