Wilcox, Wehrman, bridge Atlantic, represent ARA in global forum

ARA President David Wilcox II and Executive Vice President Christine Wehrman attended the first RentEx Exhibition and Conference in Maastricht, The Netherlands, in September to represent the American Rental Association at a forum for rental associations held as a part of the conference. They attended the international event to gain a better understanding of the European rental market and its major players, as well as to discuss how ARA can work productively with rental associations on a global level. The KHL Group, East Sussex, UK, sponsored the RentEx exhibition. The KHL Group publishes five magazines in Europe, including European Rental News and Access International, and manages related exhibitions. RentEx took place concurrently with the fifth APEX Show for access equipment, also sponsored by The KHL Group. The RentEx exhibition provided a timely overview of the hire (rental) industry going through immense change in Europe, with the rise of pan-European rental companies, the increasing involvement of construction equipment manufacturers in the rental business and the ongoing trend for end-users to rent rather than own equipment. “The forum discussion [for associations] centered on getting acquainted, investigating opportunities for cooperation, introducing our own association programs and services and planning for future forums,” Wehrman said. “Five associations were present at the conference. We had a productive session and will meet again in Anaheim next February and hope to add a number of other rental associations to the meeting session that ARA will host.” Another reason Wilcox and Wehrman attended the conference and forum was to participation in ARA’s 2003 Annual Convention and Rental Trade Show in Anaheim, Feb. 10-13. “We visited with many companies and many individuals who can gain from participating in our Anaheim convention,” Wehrman said. In addition to a meeting, ARA will host an International Reception on Tuesday, Feb. 11, for convention attendees from throughout the world. The second RentEx event tentatively will take place in 2004, to run concurrently with the next APEX event. “ARA will continue to evaluate our attendance and participation with this and other international opportunities,” Wehrman said. “ARA members and the rental industry will benefit from strategic relationships between ARA and organizations that share common interests and goals. ARA will take the leadership role in facilitating relationships among rental associations throughout the world that enhance our presence internationally and benefit our members,” she said.
