New AIS, ARA committee to improve safety awareness, practices

As rental-business-insurance costs continue to balloon in 2002, a committee of ARA members and staff met with ARA Insurance Services’ (AIS) President Phil Kelling and Director of Marketing/Claims Mike Martinie to develop new programs that will decrease losses for members by increasing safety awareness and improving operational practices. “We accepted this statement as our mission,” Martinie said. “The committee agreed that rental dealers need new approaches to safety. As the insurance company of the American Rental Association, ARA Insurance Services and this committee will develop these approaches, as well as new delivery systems, to effectively help members improve their safety programs, reduce their risks and lower their cost of insurance in this hard insurance market.” As a first step, the committee decided to develop self-inspection checklists, which it will pass along to AIS customers who will use them in their businesses. The first will focus on fire protection, and subsequent checklists will cover premises security, slips and falls, theft prevention, protective equipment, and rental contracts. The committee will document the findings of participants, and report the results to the industry. In RENTAL MANAGEMENT and Rental Pulse, the committee also will list the five most frequent and severe business losses, referencing applicable ARA products, such as the Safety Training System CD-ROM, and AIS programs, such as the Ready-to-Rent, Ready-to-Dig and Ready-to-Tow programs, available to members. Other ideas are in the planning stage, including a driver-training program requested by an ARA member in Pennsylvania. The ARA staff is working to coordinate a RenTech: Training for the Rental Professional program about driver training in the Pennsylvania area in conjunction with an ARA state association activity. For additional information about the resources now available to help you establish better safety practices in your business and reduce your risk of loss, call ARA Insurance Services toll free at (800) 821-6580, or visit online at www.arainsure.com.
